Festival 2008 • November 13 - 16
The 5th Annual Poetry Gabriola Festival is a small miracle of literature in performance. Join celebrated artists like George Bowering, Ivan Coyote and Richard van Camp for four days of poetry, spoken word, storytelling, and music on Gabriola Island! Join a writing workshop, read poetry in the hot tub during Alphabet Soup and enjoy a dozen poets roving around the village in Buskers Galore! Twenty-four artists, 12 events, six workshops and ten venues! Don't forget the After Hours Open Mic with Bufflehead at the Surf Pub.
The Poetry Gabriola Society values risk, innovation, and the spirit of adventure. We present many events throughout the year, and are committed to a culturally diverse program steeped in artistic excellence.
Upcoming Events
CD Release Party and Performance: Suitcase Local
At the Roxy: Thursday, October 30, 2008. 8:00pm.
Hilary Peach, Alex Varty and Andreas Kahre are pleased to be releasing their first ensemble CD, Suitcase Local. This spoken-word and music fusion is a spooky, ironic retelling of some of Peach's experiences as a Canadian woman working as a welder in the construction and maintenance of power plants south of the border. The poetic narrative by Hilary Peach and the original score, written and performed by Alex Varty (guitar) and Andreas Kahre (percussion), weaves blues, new music, abstract soundscapes, middle eastern riffs and science fiction into an eery and beautiful portrait of place.
This is a FREE event. Bring champagne.
