To celebrate opening night of the 2007 Festival, Poetry Gabriola would like to invite you to dinner. We're kicking off with a fantastic concert in the Great Room at the Surf Lodge with this year's International Artists: Scottish bard Alasdair Roberts and American underground duo Charalambides.
At only 30, Alasdair Roberts has already emerged as one of Scotland 's greatest contributions to contemporary music. This Glasgow resident's talents are diverse: he's a compelling singer of traditional ballads; a writer of magical songs; and a guitarist whose fingerstyle approach mixes sturdy melodies with sparkling ornamentation. He is currently on tour, celebrating the release of his fourth CD, The Amber Gatherers.
Opening act Charalambides, aka Christina and Tom Carter, take American roots music and psychedelic rock as their starting place. Progenitors of the current freak-folk movement, they seek beauty in fragile vocal melodies, layered guitar tones, and a sense of meditative calm.

Blabbermouth Café

A post-modern, irony drenched, rant-fest, with stylized variations on the theme of beat. This alchemic concoction of writers, musicians and performers will channel ontological barbs through beatified bards. Includes an open mic segment with a twist plus a world premiere “Howl-along.”

With Nathan Tinkham
Local legend Nathan Tinkham has been writing songs for over 20 years, songs that have been recorded by Quartette, Cindy Church, Melanie, Bill and Bonnie Hearne and many other well-known artists. In this informal presentation/demonstration, Nathan will discuss the process of songwriting, from the first concept, to the final, finished piece. Nathan will also share some of the many songwriting stories he has collected over two decades of conversations with Ian Tyson, Sylvia Tyson, Tom Russell and other songwriters he has had the pleasure to know and work with.

Charm, Beauty and Poise: Timeless Tips For Girls Who Have Let Themselves GoPresented by visual artist and accidental author Sheila Norgate
There are some who say that Gulf Island women – Gabriolans chief among them – may have allowed their beauty standards to slide; they may have let too much nature take its course. If this sounds like you; if putting your best foot forward involves a Birkenstock sandal; if your favorite dance hall bears the word ‘agriculture' somewhere in its name; if your husband thinks allure is something only found in a fishing tackle box, then this presentation may be just the thing to give your glamour battery a road-side boost and just in time for the fast approaching festive season.

Note: Tickets to the two afternoon shows at The Roxy, November 24, will be available at the door 30 minutes before each show (not at Artworks). Admission is covered by a festival pass (only $25 for the weekend, available at Artworks), but this venue has a 50-seat capacity, and only the first 50 people to arrive will be seated. So please come early!!
The history of oral/aural tradition often overlooks the street bards, corner orators, roving minstrels, guerrilla poets and wandering songsters. But who among us has never been moved by a lone sidewalk performer? Legislated away by city planners set on sweeping the streets, these characters are one of our most vital and direct links to song and story. These front-line cultural warriors take an all-weather stand against the sterilization of the sidewalk. On Saturday, November 24, Poetry Gabriola and local businesses tip our hats to the buskers.

Dennis McNally (San Francisco) – Acclaimed author of the 1979 Jack Kerouac biography Desolate Angel: Jack Kerouac, the Beat Generation, and America, Dennis is also the authorized biographer of The Grateful Dead, having toured with the band for 11 years. He will be reading from Kerouac's On The Road and Mexico City Blues accompanied by madcap piano genius Paul Plimley.

This elegant evening will feature a rare mix of contemporary and classical Japanese literature and music. We are delighted to welcome shakuhachi master Takeo Yamashiro from Vancouver playing some seldom heard early works. Joining Takeo will be Naomi Beth Wakan reading from her Japanese-themed poetry and prose, and international scholar Sonja Arntzen reading from her translation of The Kagero Diary . This poetry and prose text from a 10 th century woman's diary is emblematic of a distinctly prolific time in women's literary history. Naomi Beth Wakan and Sumiko Nishizawa will also read some favorite tanka in English and Japanese. A highlight of the evening will be Sonja, Takeo, and Yasue Carlson collaborating in a large-scale demonstration of Japanese calligraphy as a meditation experience. A rare evening, giving you “A Touch Of Japan”.
